Q & A with James Twerell

James Terry Twerell is a practicing psychologist in New York City and author of both fiction and non-fiction literature. His popular books I AM ADAM and LIGHT AND SHADOW, reflect a spiritual journey that spans over 50 years of seeking and study. Starting in 2010, he took a turn in his creative road by publishing Signal 30, a crime and mystery novel. His award winning book, Catch and Release, is a further departure from his previous genre as he explores the beauty and intrigue of a romance and mystery novel. The newest novel is entitled PSYCH and is a psychological thriller rapidly moving up the best-seller charts.

James and his wife Janetta are avid boaters and live in Long Island New York and Sarasota Florida. The following questions and answers are a further reflection of the authors thoughts:

Question: The Domatarious Chronicles say that James Shipman Twerell is the author. What is that all about?

Answer: While I am not a split personality, I am actually both people. I was born James Terry Shipman but adopted legally by my stepfather who changed Shipman to Twerell. Shipman ties into the second book (The Light and the Shadow) as the writers name, so I changed back to a mixture of Shipman /Twerell.

Question: Some of your books have a spiritual dimension. Is this part of your writing or part of your life?

Answer: It is part of my life. I have lived a varied spiritual journey encompassing being a person void of spiritual understanding to being a minister. I was clergy for many years. I had a lot of trouble with organized religion, so expanded my search into psychology and spiritual understanding. I come from a place of Christian understanding, but I have no problem being open with other faiths. To me God is much bigger than our small rules and regulations. I am where I am in my journey, and as the apostle Paul said, “Wherever I find myself, there I am content.”

Question: Who is your greatest inspiration?

Answer: Many people, but in writing I love Hemingway. In spiritual understanding I love Robert Johnson. In psychology I love Jung. In life I love my wife Janetta.

Question: Is Signal 30 an intentioanl departure from the spiritual writing?
Answer: I enjoy every aspect of life and Signal 30 developed out of many fun hours on the docks with my friend Richie Sala.  Retired from New York State Police, he has hundreds of short stories locked in his brain. This is a compilation of several stories.

Question: Catch and Release and your new book PSYCH are dramatic moves from your original writings. Is this intentional?

Answer: Neither intentional or an accident. It is just me.
